Message from Our Executive Director

NOLA Foodshed 1

Welcome to our relaunched website. The changes you see are to reflect the evolving role that NOFFN needs to play in furthering food justice in New Orleans.

NOFFN remains first and foremost a food justice organization that believes everyone, both in the the city and areas around it, should have access to good food regardless of their income status or their geography. We work to empower underserved communities to become food secure and self sufficient.

We are mindful that the way we have developed to this day has led to a consolidation of production and distribution creating a food system full of struggling farmers, reliance on fossil fuels for growing and distribution, food deserts in cities and rural areas, and an abundance of food-like substances that are the root of our health problems. We are also cognizant that the current economic system has created a multitude of unjust  social and economic stratification that politicians and bureaucrats spend much to much time arguing over evidence of its existence and rarely get to any forward motion on alleviating the hardship that many people live every day.

The system isn’t working. And we work to change it.

NOFFN’s collaborative work intends to show alternative community-created ways to make a just local food system. We are not about charity. We are about increasing the capacity — education, skills, opportunities — of individuals and groups so that they themselves can address their needs.

Join us. We can learn from each other as we make a better food system.

Best,

Sanjay Kharod

Executive Director
