Last citrus season, the New Orleans Fruit Tree Project harvested over 3,000 pounds of fruit from the backyards and side lots of thirteen resident’s homes in six different neighborhoods across the city. NOFTP not only kept A LOT of fruit from going to waste, it helped get fresh, local produce to those who need it most by donating the majority of the harvested fruit to Second Harvest Food Bank. The fruit became part of the Food Box Program, which provides at least a three-day supply of food to people and families in temporary crisis. The citrus donated by NOFTP translated to over 1,082 meals served to people who may otherwise have gone hungry.
This citrus season, we are pleased to announce the continuation of The New Orleans Fruit Tree Project through the generosity of the Wisner Donation, a grant offered by the City of New Orleans. With the $10,000 award NOFTP will purchase a truck, ladders and more harvesting equipment so that more harvests can take place and more fresh, healthy produce can reach those who need it most.
And you can help!
The New Orleans Fruit Tree Project operates through the generosity of tree owners who donate their fruit and trees for harvesting. All trees are registered by their owners and harvested only upon request. We work with tree owners to assess fruit ripeness, site accessibility and harvest scheduling in advance of each event. We will harvest almost anything from satsumas to grapefruits, LA Sweets to lemons! Tree owners are encouraged to join the fun but can sit back and watch too. Tree owners are welcome to a portion of each harvest or can choose to donate it all.
If you would like more information on the New Orleans Fruit Tree project or would like to register your tree please email Megan Nuismer, Program Manager/Harvest Coordinator at nolafruit@gmail.com.
